The Verification Project · Room II

The Admission

The first room ended with a question. This door opens with its answer.

It is not a password.* Nothing beyond this point is private or restricted. The door asks only that you say something.

What three-word admission preserves the possibility of learning?
The door is open

You entered “I don’t know.”

If you typed it because you truly didn’t know the answer, you have already understood it.

Before you go on, notice what just happened. This page checked the words you entered. It could not check anything else.

VerifiedYou entered the expected phrase.
Not establishedWhether you meant it, believe it or live by it.

That gap is the subject of this exhibit. A system can confirm an action. It cannot, from the action alone, establish an intention, a belief or a character. Neither can we, about one another, as often as we assume we can.

The next room is a commons: places to keep examining.

* A note on verification: the answer to this question has been in this page’s source code all along, and the next room’s address works for anyone who has it. The door was never a lock. Verification was always available.
